Summer Time Moving

Summer is usually the busiest time of the year for moving, the warm weather and brilliant sunshine makes this time of a year the perfect time to move. Unfortunately, the summer also means that there could be a good chance of rain and not to mention thunderstorms as well. Since rainy conditions never prevent a move, here are a few solutions to move your items safely while keeping dry.

Whether you have carpet or tiles in your current or new home having water on the floor can make getting back and forth when moving very difficult. On tiles, the rain water brought in from the mover’s shoes can cause slips and falls while the water on the carpet can give off bad odor overtime. Protect your carpet by using carpet runners. They not only serve as coverings for your carpet but also as which are also ideal for laying out on your stairs should you have carpet there as well.

If you have tiles it would be wise to invest in some absorbent and anti-slip mats. These mats can also be used on hardwood floors as well.

Cardboard moving boxes can also be challenging when moving in the rain. If you are able to park the moving truck as close as possible to the entrance of your home, then you will probably still be able to move your cardboard boxes into the truck and back out again without it getting soaked. Remember to get a good grip of the bottom of the boxes so that they won’t fall apart. Another alternative if the weather forecast predicts rain around the time you are moving is to consider renting plastic boxes. Plastic boxes are water-resistant, durable and can be locked during the move.

For the larger items, plastic coverings and tarps work best for protection from the rain.
Rain puddles and mud can make walking in the rain a bit of a risk. With that in mind be careful to walk slowly and carefully when moving the larger items to and from the truck.

The same kind of care should also go into driving to your new location since the rain can also lower your visibility. For the self-movers, you may want to sit and wait a few hours until the bad weather tapers off.
Even if you choose professional movers, try to be there for them while they move your items. Summer rain usually means a rise in humidity; be sure to have cold beverages on hand should they need to quench their thirsts.
